The world is full of awful circumstances due to the fact that humans have evil nature. People make choices to benefit themselves simply due to the fact that putting others first takes effort and thought. Being a good person is definitely possible, but, because it isn’t easy, people often make poor choices. Laws may motivate some, but people will always make choices to break the law. The cost of doing something good or something bad is often determined by a different threshold depending on the person, which is why it is so difficult to mandate good behavior. All people will eventually fail and fall short of perfection regardless of the incentives they have to do good. No amount of laws will fix it; there is no such thing as a utopia.

Now that we have focused in on the grim reality that is our sinful human nature, the questions become “What can we do about it?” and “If people are bound to a vicious cycle of sin, how do some people overcome it better than others?” People spend their whole lives searching for answers to these questions. The absolute truth is that all we can do is try to be better by doing better. Law are certainly important to an extent, but there is no good way to force morals upon someone.

For me personally, I find that I am a better person by simply walking in my faith. I try my best to so deeply root myself in the core belief that Jesus died on the cross for my sins, and through learning how to truly believe that more and more each day, His love envelops me. I am made a better person because I know that I am loved despite my sinful nature, and my deepening understanding of that is what makes me strive to be better because I am being built into who I am made to be. Utopias are impossible because our imperfections are what make us humans. We are able to make actual progress because of our sinful nature; there is a purpose for it.
